Raiatea Again

On Sunday we stayed at Taha’a and explored the nooks and crannies of the bay and its island. Weather was wild with 40+ knots so it was definitely not a day to put to sea. We had another great dinner at the Yacht Club.  Great Pina Coladas and virgin cocktails were enjoyed and we had some very fresh and fantastic Mahi Mahi from the local fisherman. The fisherman delivered it to the YC at 5pm. William and Jubbie from on an Oyster 66 Fuerto had come across to Taha’a for a break from Bora Bora. They called on the radio this morning that they had lost their dinghy and anticipating a similar problem to ours we offered to help with the search. Fortunately their 12 ft dingy with a 40HP motor was found drifting so we celebrated with them at the yacht club. Richard and Vivian from the yacht club were their usual great hosts and a great night was had by all.

On Monday in moderating winds we sailed to Raiatea, picked up a mooring and  hired a car to tour the island.  There was a great little book in the car that highlighted all the key areas to stop, explained the history and provided great commentary in somewhat broken English!!  A highlight was the Marae de Taputaputea – the most historical ruins in the south pacific and located at the south east corner of Raiatea Island.  The site outlined the amazing historical significance and the areas is still used as ceremonial grounds. Just driving around the island provided another perspective that can’t be seen by boat.  So many amazing views and inlets. We finished our drive with a late lunch in Uturoa before heading back to the boat and moving to the ‘Hurricane Hole’ in Baie Haamene on Taha’a Island.  

On Tuesday, after waking up to a ‘millpond’ and near perfect morning, we headed up the North East side of Taha’a to find some good anchorages and snorkelling.  We found what has to be the hatchery for sea cucumbers with dozen per square foot. A beautiful calm day and we made a few stops and saw some great fish before anchoring or the evening.  Another gorgeous day in paradise.  With most things stowed away for the evening, tomorrow we will head back to Bora Bora.
